"The Government of the Maldives has declared its intention to intervene in the case filed by South Africa against Israel at the ICJ, on the grounds that Israel is violating the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide," the president's office said in a statement.

The island nation believes that "Israel's demands for the immediate withdrawal of thousands of Palestinian civilians seeking refuge in eastern Rafah are evidence of Israel's non-compliance with the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice," the statement said.

"These genocidal acts perpetrated by the Israeli occupation forces under the pretext of security concerns have resulted in mass displacement, starvation and the blocking of humanitarian aid," the statement added.

The Asian nation joins other countries such as Egypt and Turkey, which have also recently announced their formal intervention in support of South Africa's case against Israel.

Israel launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip following Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023, which left around 1,200 dead and more than 200 hostages on Israeli territory.

The military offensive in Gaza has so far caused more than 35,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Hamas-controlled authorities in Gaza.
