In a statement, the governor of Khartoum state, Ahmed Ozman Hamza, announced the measure, which includes the closure of all commercial establishments and entertainment venues from 10:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. in Lisbon) until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, while the circulation of vehicles will be prohibited from 11:00 p.m.

The curfew was imposed "in light of the current security conditions to preserve the lives and property of citizens," Hamza said, adding that authorities could confiscate any vehicle that violates the order and arrest "suspects" of non-compliance.

The governor of Khartoum said that anyone who violates the order will face a penalty of up to six months in prison and a fine of up to one million Sudanese pounds (about 1,542 euros).

Sudanese authorities declared a state of emergency in Khartoum, the capital, in early May, to "regulate" the presence of foreign fighters affiliated with the RSF, who are trying to take control of the capital and its metropolitan area.

So far, control of Khartoum is divided between the paramilitaries and the army, which recently carried out a major offensive in the neighboring city of Omdurman and recaptured much of the strategic city, vital to feeding the supply line that connects eastern and western Sudan.

The conflict in Sudan, which escalated into war on April 15 last year, has already caused the death of about 15,000 people and forced 8.6 million Sudanese to leave the country, pushing another 18 million into a situation of hunger, according to data from the United Nations, which has repeatedly called attention to the escalation of the conflict and its extensive and lasting consequences for the Sudanese.
