The University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands announced Monday it will remain closed for two days after a pro-Palestinian protest on one of its campuses turned violent, requiring police intervention.

The university said it had canceled all classes Tuesday and Wednesday and would close all its buildings because it could not guarantee the safety of people on campus, the Reuters news agency reported.

The decision came after the university was the scene of violent clashes between protesters and police over the past week. The demonstrations have targeted the university’s ties to Israeli institutions, and activists have been camping out on the campus.

On Monday, police were called in after a group of masked individuals joined a peaceful protest by university staff and students. The group blocked emergency exits and entrances and caused “considerable damage” to the building, the university said.

Amsterdam police said the university had filed a criminal complaint against the demonstrators for vandalism.

Protests have erupted at universities in several countries since a Hamas militant attack on southern Israel killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took captive two Israeli soldiers.

In the ensuing war, Israel killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, according to the local Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and noncombatants.
