“It would be cruel to consider Hamas a terrorist organization,” says Erdogan

More than 1,000 Hamas members are currently hospitalized in Turkey, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today, reiterating that he does not consider the Palestinian Islamist movement, at war with Israel in the Gaza Strip, a terrorist organization.

"So many Hamas members are dying. The entire West is attacking them with all kinds of weapons and ammunition," the Turkish head of state underlined, in statements to journalists alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
"To consider Hamas (...) a terrorist organization would be cruel," he stressed, recalling that Greece and Turkey "do not agree" on this "very important" issue. "On the contrary, Hamas is a resistance organization," insisted Erdogan, who last month received the political leader of the Palestinian movement, Ismail Haniyeh. The Palestinian movement is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and, in particular, by the European Union (EU), a bloc for which Turkey is a candidate country. On October 7, fighters from the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) -- in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007 -- carried out an unprecedented attack on Israeli territory, killing more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians. They also took more than 250 hostages, 128 of whom remain in captivity and 36 have since died, according to the latest report from the Israeli army. In retaliation, Israel declared a war to "eradicate" Hamas, which has now entered its 220th day, continuing to threaten to spread to the entire Middle East region, and has so far caused 35,034 deaths in the Gaza Strip, more than 78,000 injured and thousands of missing people presumed buried in the rubble, mostly civilians, according to updated figures from local authorities. The conflict has also caused almost two million displaced people, plunging the overcrowded and poor Palestinian enclave into a severe humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.1 million people in a "catastrophic hunger situation" that is claiming victims - "the highest number ever recorded" by the UN in studies on food security in the world.
