In an event in Washington, Blair stated that the climate crisis is disproportionately affecting Canada, and especially the Arctic regions.

"In the Arctic we are seeing the warming increase four times the global average, which makes it more accessible and vulnerable", stressed the minister, who met today with the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, to present him with Canada's new defense policy.

Blair added that both Russia and China are investing in Arctic infrastructure, "creating new capabilities", and that both countries have expressed "a desire to work together" against the interests of Canada and the United States, forcing Ottawa to update its defense policy.

This strategy is focused on protecting Canada and North America.

"The main task is to protect our north and work with the United States to ensure continental security", he added.

Bill Blair also reaffirmed Canada's commitment to allocate 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to defense and noted that for the fiscal year 2029-2030 the number will increase to 1.76%.

The minister also stressed that, with the more than likely acquisition of a new fleet of submarines, the percentage will exceed the target set by NATO countries.

"Submarines are becoming a strategic asset and Canada needs to invest. Our current fleet is aging. They were bought second-hand in the late 1990s", he recalled.
