Stressing that "there are no fundamental conflicts of interest" between the two sides, Wang underlined the importance of maintaining "regular exchanges" between the two neighboring countries.

"It is essential to work together to uphold the original intention of diplomatic ties, adhere to friendship and cooperation, and overcome obstacles," the minister said, according to a statement released on the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Wang stressed the need for mutual understanding and respect, strengthening communication and exchanges, and clearing up misunderstandings to "build trust" at the bilateral level.

The official urged South Korea to adhere to the 'One China' principle and "cautiously handle Taiwan-related issues".

He also said that China is accelerating "the development of new-quality productive forces", which "presents important opportunities" for South Korea.

According to the same note, Cho Tae-yul expressed hope that this visit would be a "significant step" in relations between South Korea and China.

The South Korean foreign minister assured that his government "deeply values its relations with China" and "aspires to work closely with the neighboring country to develop a healthier and more mature strategic cooperative partnership, based on mutual respect, reciprocity and common interests".

The two ministers also exchanged views on trilateral cooperation between China, Japan and South Korea, as well as on the situation on the Korean peninsula and other issues of common interest, reiterating their commitment to regional peace and prosperity, the statement said.

Bilateral ties between Seoul and Beijing have deteriorated in recent years, with China's ambassador to South Korea, Xing Haiming, warning the government of Yoon Suk-yeol that it would regret it if it "bet on China's defeat" in the context of the rivalry between Beijing and Washington.

After taking office in January, Cho stressed the importance of maintaining a "stable relationship" with China, South Korea's main trading partner and a key player in terms of diplomacy - now non-existent - with North Korea.

Cho's presence in China could serve to support the convening of what would be the first trilateral summit between South Korea, China and Japan since 2019.
