In the village of Blesdijke in the Netherlands, there is a castle that stands out in the landscape, but those who might think it is a medieval construction are mistaken. In fact, the castle was built by Gerry Halman, a local resident.

As AFP reports, Gerry Halman, 76, spent 34 years building the castle, which is located at the bottom of his garden and is full of fantasy, as it is decorated with knights, damsels and even a dragon made of recycled metal.

The idea came about in 1990. "One morning in 1990, I said to my wife: 'I'm ready. I have the complete image'", the man told AFP.

Building and furnishing the castle, which was named 'Olt Stoutenburght', became his "passion" and he began to travel to find the materials according to what he had planned. Thus, the 26-metre work features materials from various countries, most of them recycled or bought at antique markets.

The Dutchman had no experience in construction, but admitted that he felt "obliged" to go ahead with the project, as he had always been a fan of the fantasy world.

Gerry recalled that it was not easy to obtain a building permit. "The mayor said: 'You're crazy. You're not a builder. You have no experience in architecture and you want to build a castle", recalled the retired man.

His insistence paid off and Gerry eventually managed to obtain the permit, on the condition that the work could not exceed 28 metres in height.

The Dutchman financed the entire project, but admits that he does not know how much he has spent so far.

"Never ask the price of something, because you will never dare to do it", he added.
