In a statement, the EU Council announced the expansion of the sanctions list against Iranian individuals and entities that are helping Russia to continue the invasion of Ukrainian territory that began on February 24, 2022.
The sanctions list already included everything related to the production and export of 'drones' (unmanned vehicles), but will now also include Iranian missiles.
Similar to the sanctions framework that is in place for 'drones', all individuals and entities involved in the production and export of missiles are subject to asset freezes and a ban on entry into EU territory.
This sanction action will also include Tehran's actions in exporting missiles and 'drones, and their components, to the Middle East. Iran is accused of supplying military equipment to militias in the region.
"In view of Iran's continued military support to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as to non-state armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region, and following Iranian drone and missile attacks against Israel on 13 April 2024, the Council decided that the EU's restrictive measures will now cover not only drones but also missiles", Brussels said in the note released.
