A 15-year-old boy saved his mother and his 14-month-old sister from a fire that broke out this Tuesday in the building where they lived, in the Spanish municipality of Bermeo, in the Basque Country.
"He's a hero. He saved us", highlighted Unax's mother, AinhoaVillaragut, in statements to the EFE agency.
The fire caused second-degree burns to her husband, and also led to four other people being hospitalised due to smoke inhalation.
The young man, who lived on the fifth floor of the building, knew how to act in the event of a fire because he had once read an information note distributed by the firefighters.
In line with this, the teenager took his mother and sister to the room with the least smoke and covered the door with wet cloths, while trying to calm his mother down. Then, he called the emergency services.
The fire broke out at 8:05 this morning, on the fourth floor. All the residents were able to return to their homes, except for those who lived on the fourth and fifth floors, which were "totally affected", according to the mayor Nadia Nemeh Somaly.
Although most of the residents should be taken in by family members, the City Council will provide support to those who have nowhere to go, according to the official.
