The mine, a Soviet-made "KPM" type, was located about two nautical miles off the northeastern coast of Bulgaria, in an area where numerous cargo ships are anchored waiting to enter port waters, the ministry said in a statement.
"The Bulgarian naval forces are prepared to act against the mines, with the aim of ensuring safe navigation in the Bulgarian maritime spaces," the official note added.
The destroyed mine, weighing 350 kilos, is a type of munition used in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, an expert who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Spanish news agency EFE.
Since it was found adrift after its anchor chain broke, it is not possible to determine whether the mine belonged to Ukrainian or Russian forces, the same expert added.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, drifting sea mines have been regularly detected in the waters of the Black Sea, including in the Bosphorus.
Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey, which also share the Black Sea, signed an agreement last January to cooperate in detecting and destroying these objects in order to minimize the risk of floating mines to civilian navigation.
