Italian authorities have intercepted a remote-controlled submarine that was allegedly going to be used by an international drug trafficking ring to transport narcotics, Tuesday.

The discovery was made during investigations into potential suspects in Turin, northern Italy, according to a statement cited by CBS News.

The suspects were growing cannabis but claimed to be managers of car washes.

"The traffickers designed and tested a small remote-controlled submarine, probably designed to transport drugs," added the Carabinieri police.

The network, which operated between Ecuador, Belgium, France, Spain and Italy, was led by two Albanian brothers.

In total, authorities seized 204 kilograms of cocaine and hashish during the operation.

The cocaine is believed to have arrived in Italy from South America, via the Netherlands, while the hashish was transported in vehicles adapted with "double floors", through Spain and France.
