Poland 'will not accept migrants' under new EU pact

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Wednesday that the final text of the European Union's (EU) Migration and Asylum Pact gives "a chance to avoid serious consequences", which is why Warsaw "will not accept migrants" under it.

Tusk said that his main mission as Poland's ruler is to defend the country's interests, so he will do everything in his power to ensure that Warsaw "benefits from the migration pact".

"This is my task, and I will fulfill it," he said.

"We will not pay anything, we will not have to accept any migrants from other sources, the European Union will not impose any migrants. However, Poland will indeed demand financial support from the EU, because it has become a country that hosts hundreds of thousands of migrants," he added.

On this point, Tusk stressed that Poland has accepted, in recent years, "hundreds of thousands of migrants" from Ukraine, affected by the Russian invasion, which began in February 2022, as well as "tens of thousands of migrants from Belarus", reported the PAP agency.

The head of the Polish executive also argued that the EU's Migration and Asylum Pact was negotiated while his country was governed by the previous prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki.

"The minister representing my government voted against the adoption of the migration pact. Poland's position has been clear from the beginning," he said.

Tusk also said that he will maintain a line of "friendly but tough dialogue" with Brussels, in contrast to what Morawiecki did.

"Unlike our predecessors, without a war with the EU, in a friendly but tough dialogue, we will achieve everything that Poland is entitled to," he said.

The European Parliament's plenary session gave, in mid-April, the "green light" to the Migration and Asylum Pact, which will reform the common policy with tighter control of the EU's external borders and will offer governments "solidarity à la carte", allowing them not to host displaced migrants if they pay compensation.
