"ANA -- Aeroportos de Portugal reiterates its commitment to the development of the national airport sector for the benefit of tourism and the economy and is fully available to work immediately on the solutions presented by the Government today", it said in a statement sent to Lusa.
Following the Government's position known today regarding the increase in airport capacity in the Lisbon region, ANA guaranteed that "it will follow up on the development process of this decision, under the terms of the Concession Contract".
The decision approved today by the Government in an extraordinary Council of Ministers includes increasing the capacity of the current Humberto Delgado airport, until the new infrastructure is operational.
ANA, the concessionaire of the airports that belongs to the French multinational Vinci, had publicly expressed its preference for an airport in Montijo, for which it had even presented a project.
At a hearing in parliament last week, the promoters of the project for an airport in Santarém raised legal doubts as to whether ANA would be able to apply for the concession of the airport in Alcochete, as it had already submitted one for Montijo, and said that the lawyers they consulted believe that a tender will have to be launched for the concession of the Luís de Camões Airport.
On 11 March, the CTI published the final report of the strategic environmental assessment of the new airport, maintaining the recommendation of a single solution in Alcochete, the most advantageous, or Vendas Novas, but pointed out that Humberto Delgado + Santarém could be a transitional solution.
The PSD decided to set up an internal working group to analyse the location of the new Lisbon airport, after having agreed with the PS to set up a CTI to carry out the strategic environmental assessment.
The social democratic president, Luís Montenegro, guaranteed, before being elected, that the decision would be made "in the first days" of the Government.
