"Between 21:00 and 24:00 (two hours less in Lisbon), Ukrenergo was forced to implement controlled emergency outages in all regions of Ukraine. The reason is a significant shortage of electricity in the system after the Russian attacks and increased consumption due to a cold snap", the company explained on the Telegram network.
In the capital, Kyiv, 10% of homes had to be disconnected from the grid.
Russian forces have carried out some of their most devastating attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine in recent months, destroying key facilities across the country.
In recent days, Moscow's troops have captured around 100 to 125 square kilometres in the Kharkiv region, in north-eastern Ukraine, while making concerted efforts to advance into the partially occupied Donetsk province, in the east of the country.
Analysts believe that this is one of the most dangerous periods for Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
