Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine said in a statement that the action had met its goals.
Harvard’s interim president, Alan Garber, has agreed to meet with the students to discuss their concerns. The divestment campaign has been mirrored at similar encampments on other campuses in the US. As well as Garber, the dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Claudine Gay, will also meet the students to discuss the conflict in the Middle East. The students said they will also meet with other university leaders, including Harvard Management Company, which controls the university’s $50bn endowment. The students’ statement said that the agenda for the discussions would include disclosure of investments, divestment and reinvestment, and the creation of a Palestinian Studies Center. The students also said that the university had offered to lift the suspensions of more than two dozen students and student workers and had backed down from its threat to punish about 60 others. “In the three weeks since it was established, the encampment has broadened and deepened organizing for Palestine solidarity on campus,” a student spokesman said. In particular, he said, “it has moved the needle on divestment and disclosure at Harvard”. Read Also: Images. Student protests against war in Italian universities (Portuguese version)
