"This is not enough. More needs to be done and this is yet another example of the need to open the Rafah crossing so that we can see a more sustained flow of humanitarian assistance into Gaza," State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters at a press briefing today.

He stressed that the Biden administration continues to "do everything that we can to advocate for the opening of the Rafah crossing" and to use the Kerem Shalom crossing to its maximum capacity.

His comments came after Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said earlier that the military would not relinquish control over the Rafah crossing on the Gaza Strip under any circumstances.

His Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry later "strongly condemned the desperate attempts by the Israeli side to blame Egypt for the unprecedented humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip."
