Joe Biden and Donald Trump emerged as clear winners shortly after polls closed in the three states, where other races that could shape the next Congress in Washington were also decided.

In Maryland, Angela Alsobrooks won the Democratic primary for a U.S. Senate seat, defeating Congressman and businessman David Trone, and if she wins in November against the other winner of the night, Republican Larry Hogan, Alsobrooks would become the state’s first Black female senator.

Former Governor Hogan, a critic of former President Donald Trump (2017-2021), won the Republican nomination for a Senate seat and is one of the bets to wrest control of the upper house from the Democrats in the next legislature.

The other bet is the current governor of West Virginia, Jim Justice, who on Tuesday night won the Republican nomination to run for the seat that will be vacated at the end of the year by Democratic Senator Joe Manchin.

Justice, a millionaire and former Democrat, announced his party switch during a Trump rally in 2017, and now clearly defeated six other hopefuls.

Also in West Virginia, Congresswoman Carol Miller won the Republican nomination for the 1st Congressional District, defeating former state lawmaker Derrick Evans, who served three months in jail after participating in the January 6, 2021, assault on the Capitol.

Former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, who gained notoriety as one of the officers who repelled the January attack, lost to state Senator Sarah Elfreth in the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District, in a race that drew more than 20 opponents.

In Nebraska, Congressman Don Bacon won the Republican nomination for the 2nd Congressional District and will face Democrat Tony Vargas in November in his bid for re-election, whom he defeated by just three percentage points in 2022.
