Several U.S. Army Corps of Engineers teams set off a series of precisely placed explosives Monday to bring down the remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The metal wreckage collapsed into the water after the blasts, sending up a plume of black smoke. The cargo ship Dali has been pinned under the Baltimore bridge since the day of the crash. The Associated Press reported the explosion was needed to free the ship. The Dali will be towed by three or four tugboats to the closest marine terminal, where it is expected to undergo repairs for several weeks. Officials said the demolition went as planned. “This was a major milestone,” said Col. Estee Pinchasin, Baltimore District commander for the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Dali’s crew remained aboard during the blast, and no injuries or problems were reported. The 21 crew members aboard were not allowed to leave the Dali after it crashed into the bridge on March 26. The ship’s power failed twice due to electrical circuit breakers tripping unexpectedly before it slammed into the bridge, causing the span to collapse. Six people died in the accident.
