"There is a possible understanding, for now, that does not satisfy Sindep, but we understand that the strike should be temporarily suspended", which could still take place "if the Government does not comply with the agreed obligations", he told journalists on Tuesday.

According to Jorge Cardoso, among other measures, the Government announced a salary adjustment from January 1, 2025, raising the reference index for the career of a teacher with a degree to 91,000 escudos (825 euros) and, in the case of a career without a degree, increasing it to 55,000 escudos (499 euros).

The measure was, in the meantime, disclosed by the Ministry of Education on social media, informing that "it represents a significant budgetary impact, above 900 thousand contos (8.1 million euros) per year" and that in some aspects it goes beyond the union demands.

In the same message, the Government said that it is "about to conclude the regularization of the pending issues that have accumulated since 2008" and that it has contributed to the increase in teachers' income, some of whom will benefit from an effective salary increase of over 90%.

Still in the negotiations that allowed the strike to be suspended, Sindep indicated that there was an agreement on some formulas for promoting the teaching class, but other details related to benefits and pending issues remain to be resolved.

Jorge Cardoso said he hopes to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Government by the end of the week.

In November 2023, teachers went on a two-day strike, paralyzing schools from the first to the 12th grade in almost the entire archipelago.

Cape Verde has about 7,000 teachers in basic and secondary education.
