A Russian regional deputy and supporter of Vladimir Putin has claimed he survived an assassination attempt after releasing a video showing his car engulfed in flames following an explosion in occupied Ukraine.

Denis Kharitonov posted the footage on Telegram on Saturday, saying in the caption that he was carrying out “tasks in the zone of a special military operation”. The deputy claimed that “during the implementation of another combat mission” that day, his vehicle “was blown up… and burned to the ground”.

Kharitonov, who is a United Russia deputy in the legislative assembly of the Astrakhan region, said earlier this year that he had signed up to fight and had been deployed to the front lines. The 44-year-old did not say whether or not he had been in the car when it exploded, and gave no details about the location of the incident.

He also suggested that he had been the target of other assassination attempts. “It’s not the first time they’ve tried to blow up my car,” he wrote, blaming Ukraine for the attack.

The incident is being investigated by the Russian authorities, he said.

Dozens of pro-war figures in Russia have claimed to have been targeted in similar attacks since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Russia has frequently blamed Kyiv for the attacks.
