Ousman Sonko, who served as Gambia’s interior minister from 2006 to 2016 under then-President Yahya Jammeh, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, the Trial International NGO, which fights impunity for international crimes, said on Twitter.

The trial, which began in January, was seen by campaigners as a chance to secure a conviction under “universal jurisdiction”, which allows prosecution of serious crimes committed abroad.

The verdict was handed down on Tuesday at the Federal Criminal Court in the southern Swiss town of Bellinzona.

Sonko sought asylum in Switzerland in November 2016 and was arrested two months later.

The Swiss attorney general’s office said when it charged Sonko a year ago that the crimes he was accused of took place during the regime of Jammeh, whose government was accused of arbitrary detention, sexual violence and extrajudicial killings.
