Russia claims capture of settlements in eastern, southern Ukraine
Russian advances in the region have displaced more than 7,500 people in recent days.

Russia claimed on Monday to have captured the settlements of Glubokoe and Lukiantsi in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, and Robotyne in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.
Robotyne was one of the few Ukrainian gains during a counteroffensive in the summer of 2023, according to the French news agency AFP.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Robotyne in February this year to rally troops.
In the Kharkiv region, the target of a surprise offensive since Friday, Russian forces have “liberated the settlements of Glubokoe and Lukiantsi”, the Russian defence ministry said in a statement.
Moscow’s troops “also advanced deep into the enemy’s defences”, the ministry added, quoted by AFP.
Ukraine said Monday it was sending reinforcements to the Kharkiv region after part of its forces were forced to withdraw from some positions in the face of significant advances by Russian troops.
Zelensky on Monday cancelled planned trips abroad in the coming days that were due to include visits to Spain and Portugal.
“Volodymyr Zelensky asked to postpone all international events planned for the coming days and to set new dates,” the president’s spokesman, Sergiy Nykyforov, said on social media.
The Russian advances in the region have displaced more than 7,500 people in recent days.
Russia’s official TASS news agency on Monday reported the evacuation of some 8,000 people on the Russian side of the border.
Zelensky on Tuesday asked the United States to provide two Patriot missile systems to defend Kharkiv, during a meeting in Kyiv with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
