The European statistics agency estimates that the EU economy's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reached 897 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), down from 935 million tonnes of CO2e in the fourth quarter of 2022, without compromising the bloc's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which rose by 0.2% in the same period.

Between October and December 2023, the economic sectors responsible for the largest year-on-year reductions in GHG emissions were gas and electricity (-17.2%) and manufacturing (-3.1%).

Among the Member States, Estonia (-23%), Bulgaria (-17.0%) and Finland (-9.0%) recorded the largest cuts in polluting emissions, while Malta (7.7%), Slovenia (5.6%), Cyprus (2.3%), Slovakia (1.7%) and Greece (0.3%) saw theirs increase.

Portugal is among the 11 member states that reduced greenhouse gas emissions, 2.1% in the national case, while GDP increased.

Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) is an international measure that aims to establish the equivalence between all greenhouse gases.
