"All violence is intolerable and will be met with an implacable response to ensure the return of republican order," the French presidency added after a crisis meeting of the National Defense and Security Council on the situation in the French archipelago in the South Pacific.

According to the same statement, "the President of the Republic reiterated the need to resume political dialogue".

In the riots in the French archipelago, a policeman was seriously injured with a gunshot to the head, in the Plum area (south), the France Presse agency reported today.

The archipelago has been shaken since Monday by violent riots, which have caused the death of three people and hundreds of injuries, including police officers.

The main parties in the territory appealed for "calm and reason".

"Despite the insurrectional situation we have been living in the last forty-eight hours, and because we are called to continue living together, we solemnly appeal to the entire population to calm down and be reasonable," reads a joint statement from UC-FLNKS, the National Union for Independence, 'Les Loyalistes', Rassemblement-LR and 'Eveil océanien'.

The territory plunged into chaos due to the constitutional reform that aims to reform the electoral roll, which is contested by pro-independence supporters.

The archipelago has been experiencing decades of tension between the indigenous Kanak people, who seek independence, and the descendants of the colonizers who want to remain part of France.
