"A young man was killed by the bullets of the occupier at the northern entrance to the city of al-Bireh," in the suburbs of Ramallah, the Palestinian Health Ministry announced.

The official Wafa agency reported that Ayser Mohammad Safi, a 20-year-old student, "was fatally shot in the neck by a bullet" during clashes between Israeli forces and young people who were marching to commemorate the Nakba -- the catastrophe that occurred in 1948, during the creation of the State of Israel.

During the Nakba, some 760,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from their homes to seek refuge in neighboring countries or in what would become the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Throughout the day today, thousands of civilians continued to flee Rafah, in the south of the enclave, as the anniversary of the Nakba is marked.

"The continued suffering of millions of Palestine refugees in Palestine and the diaspora is a direct consequence of the Zionist occupation. Their legitimate right to return to their homes (...) cannot be compromised," the UN said in a statement today.
