"I am shocked. I wish Robert Fico all the strength he needs at this critical moment to recover from this brutal and irresponsible attack," the outgoing president said in a statement.

"I wish him a lot of strength at this critical moment and a quick recovery. My thoughts are also with his family and loved ones," the head of state said, via the social network X.

Caputová condemned the attack "with all vehemence".

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was injured in a shooting in Handlova, about 150 kilometers from the capital, and was taken to the hospital, according to the local press.

The television station TA3 reported that a suspect was arrested, while the Slovakian news agency TASR reported that the vice president of parliament, Lubos Blaha, confirmed the incident.

Blaha was speaking at a session of parliament, whose operation is suspended until further notice.

The shooting took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the prime minister was meeting with his supporters. The police isolated the place.

A reporter from the daily newspaper Dennik N daily heard gunshots and then saw paramedics carrying the prime minister to a car.
