"I strongly condemn the vile attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico. Acts of violence like this have no place in our societies and undermine democracy, our most precious common good. My thoughts are with Prime Minister Fico and his family," Ursula von der Leyen wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was injured in a shooting in Handlova, about 150 kilometers from the country's capital, and was taken to hospital, according to local media.

The TA3 television station reported that a suspect had been detained, while the Slovak TASR news agency said that parliament deputy chairman Lubos Blaha had confirmed the incident.

Blaha was speaking at a session of parliament, which has been suspended until further notice.

The shooting took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the prime minister was meeting supporters. Police have cordoned off the area.

A reporter for the Dennik N daily newspaper heard shots and then saw paramedics carrying the prime minister to a car.
