Mundo Rio Grande do Sul

The floods in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul have left a trail of destruction and death, affecting millions of people throughout the Brazilian state, from where countless stories of devastation and courage arrive every day. The most recent is that of a resident of Pelotas who, to protect himself from the water that entered his house, hung his bed from the ceiling.

Speaking to the TV Globo program Profissão Repórter, Leonido dos Santos Júnior explained that he tied ropes to the ends of the furniture and attached them to the wood of the ceiling.

The man's wife and son left the house, but Leonido did not want to because of the pets.

The fisherman explained that he has lived in that area for 10 years and had never seen anything like it. The house is near a lagoon called Lagoa dos Patos.

"We have lived here for ten years and water had never entered the house. It entered and never left," he said.

In recent days, Leonido has been living with a canoe at the door of his house and has been monitoring the water level inside the house through marks on a wooden stick.

It should be noted that the heavy rains and floods that have affected Rio Grande do Sul since the end of April have already killed more than 140 people. There are still more than 100 missing and 800 injured, according to the latest report.
