"I am shocked at the news of the attack on Slovakian PM [Robert] Fico after a meeting of the Slovak Cabinet in Handlova. Nothing can ever justify violence or such attacks. My thoughts are with the Prime Minister and his family," Charles Michel wrote on the X (formerly Twitter) social network.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was injured in a shooting in Handlova, about 150 kilometers from the capital, and was taken to hospital, according to local press. TA3 television reported that a suspect had been arrested, while the Slovak news agency TASR reported that the deputy speaker of parliament, Lubos Blaha, had confirmed the incident.
Blaha was speaking at a session of parliament, which was suspended until further notice.

The shooting took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the prime minister was meeting with his supporters. The police cordoned off the area. A reporter for the daily newspaper Dennik N heard gunshots and then saw paramedics carrying the prime minister to a car.
