U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken surprised onlookers Tuesday night when he took the stage for an impromptu performance at the Diktat bar near Kyiv’s main Khreshchatyk Street during a visit to the country.

Before launching into his performance, Blinken reaffirmed the United States’ support for the country as it fends off an invasion by Russian forces.

“Your soldiers, your citizens, especially in the east and in Kharkiv, are suffering. But they need to know, you need to know, that the United States is with you, much of the world is with you. They’re fighting not only for a free Ukraine, but for a free world. And the free world is with you as well,” the top U.S. diplomat said, according to CNN International.

He then picked up a guitar and joined Ukrainian band 19.99 for a rendition of Neil Young’s 1989 hit “Rockin’ in the Free World.”

Blinken’s visit was the first by a Biden administration official since the long-delayed approval of additional U.S. funding for Ukraine.

The bar, which features heavy metal doors and metal reinforcements along the walls, is popular with combat veterans and off-duty soldiers, according to CNN International.

The bar’s Instagram page highlighted Blinken’s unexpected performance at the venue. “Keep rocking the free world! Thank you, Blinken,” the caption of the post reads, noting that the U.S. secretary of state had “joined the list of celebrities” who have visited the establishment.
