"I was deeply shocked by the heinous attack on my friend Prime Minister Robert Fico," the nationalist leader wrote on the social network X, adding that he prays for "his health and speedy recovery".
Slovakia's prime minister was shot and wounded in the town of Handlova, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) from the capital, and taken to hospital.
TA3 television reported that a suspect had been detained, while deputy parliamentary speaker Lubos Blaha confirmed the attack to the Slovak news agency TASR.
Blaha was speaking at a parliamentary session that was suspended.
The shooting took place outside the local House of Culture, where the 59-year-old prime minister was due to attend a government meeting. Police cordoned off the area.
