The 22-year-old officer, a member of a mobile brigade, was shot in the head in the Plum district, in the south of the archipelago's main island, and efforts by emergency services failed to save his life.

The situation is critical in this autonomous French territory in the South Pacific, located 17,000 kilometres from the mainland, after riots started by groups of young locals who oppose an electoral roll reform approved by the French parliament which dilutes the weight of the local population.

Many buildings have been set on fire and clashes with security forces are constant, which has already led the government representative on the island to describe the situation as "insurrectional".

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said that "hundreds" of officers have been injured in clashes with groups of demonstrators.

French President Emmanuel Macron ordered a state of emergency to be declared and said that he will be "unyielding" in guaranteeing public order, while Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced that police reinforcements will be sent.

Macron also ordered his head of government to call the parties of New Caledonia and postponed the promulgation of the constitutional revision, to give dialogue a chance.
