"I am shocked and appalled by the shooting of Prime Minister Robert Fico. I wish him strength for a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with Robert Fico, his loved ones, and the people of Slovakia," Jens Stoltenberg wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was wounded in a shooting in Handlova, about 150 kilometers from the capital, and was taken to the hospital, according to local media.
Broadcaster TA3 reported that a suspect had been detained, while the Slovak news agency TASR said Deputy Parliament Speaker Lubos Blaha confirmed the incident.

Blaha was speaking at a session of parliament, which was suspended until further notice.
The shooting took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the prime minister was meeting supporters. Police cordoned off the area.
A reporter for the daily newspaper Dennik N heard gunshots and then saw paramedics taking the prime minister to a car.
