"The attack on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is appalling," Zelensky reacted on social media X, condemning the "act of violence against our neighboring partner state's head of government.".

The Slovak prime minister was injured in a shooting in Handlova, about 150 kilometers from the country's capital, and was taken to the hospital.

The TA3 television station reported that a suspect had been detained, while the deputy speaker of parliament, Lubos Blaha, confirmed the attack to the Slovakian news agency TASR.

Blaha was speaking at a session of parliament, which has suspended its work.

The shooting took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the 59-year-old prime minister was meeting with his government. The police cordoned off the area.

Since coming to power in 2023, Robert Fico has ended Bratislava's military aid to Ukraine and called for peace talks between Kiev and Moscow, drawing criticism from Ukrainian authorities and their European allies.

More recently, in early April and in a change of tone towards the Ukrainian conflict, he advocated a peaceful solution that respects the country's "territorial integrity".
