A pizzeria in central Naples, Italy, has been seized by police as part of an investigation into the Italian mafia. The restaurant was opened by Ernesto Cacialli, known as the "'pizzaiolo' to the president" after he cooked a pizza for Bill Clinton in 1994.

The Guardian reports that the owner of Dal Presidente pizzeria and his wife are among five people arrested on suspicion of links to the Camorra Contini clan.

Of the five suspects, two – including a serving police officer – have been placed under house arrest. The investigation centres on fraudulent transfer of assets and money laundering.

Ernesto Cacialli, who died in 2009, became known as the "'pizzaiolo' to the president" after he cooked Clinton a 'pizza a portafoglio' at the Di Matteo pizzeria where he worked.

The former US president was in Naples for a G7 meeting in 1994 when the smell of the pizza cooking lured him and his security detail into the historic centre of the city.

Cacialli, who won several awards for his pizza making, opened Dal Presidente in 2001. After his death in 2009, the pizzeria was taken over by a new owner, who is alleged to have used money from a leading member of the Contini clan to buy it.

According to the Guardian, the pizzeria, which is popular with both Neapolitans and tourists, is among €35 million worth of assets seized by police during the investigation.
