Tarifa. Angolan taxi drivers admit to stopping due to the "silence"

The Cooperative of Angolan Taxi and Motorcycle Drivers today questioned the Government's "silence" on the officialisation of the new taxi fare, reminding that the moratorium for the end of the fuel subsidy ends today and admitting the paralysis of services.

The Government and taxi drivers agreed, in a meeting held on the 3rd, to increase the taxi fare to 200 kwanzas (22 cents), against the current price of the "race", set at 150 kwanzas (17 cents), recalled the president of the cooperative, António Freitas.

To Lusa, the official said that, at the time, the authorities committed to formalizing the tariff by May 15, when the deadline for the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy ends, and questioned the "silence" of the authorities.

"We agreed to adjust the taxi fare price to 200 kwanzas and then it was agreed that the State should pronounce itself, they gave us a moratorium of 15 more days, which ends today, since the taxi drivers put pressure to make it official", he said.

Freitas admitted that private taxi service operators, known as "blue and white", may stop if the authorities do not formalize the new tariff by Thursday.

"We will analyze, or we will have to stop or the State will pronounce itself, or, then, it will continue to subsidize [the fuel] of the taxi drivers", he said.

The associative leader said he was concerned about the "Government's silence", stressing that the current speculation of the tariff and the shortening of routes result from the non-formalization of the new tariff.

"We guaranteed at the meeting that, after the price was made official, we would go out and raise awareness among taxi drivers to stop the speculation and the shortening of routes", he recalled.

The withdrawal of the state subsidy to fuel for taxi drivers was initially scheduled for April 30, but the authorities decided to extend the deadline for another 15 days, which ends today, he stressed.
