Italy’s prime minister has expressed her “firm condemnation” after the shooting of Slovakia’s prime minister on Thursday, calling it “an attack on the very foundations of democracy”.

“I received with great dismay the news of the vile attack on the Slovak prime minister. All my thoughts are with him, his family and the friendly Slovak people,” the right-wing leader said in a statement.

Meloni stressed, on behalf of the Italian government, the “strongest condemnation of all forms of violence and attacks on the very foundations of democracy and freedom”.

Robert Fico is “between life and death”, according to the government in Bratislava, after being shot “several times”, according to his official Facebook page.

The prime minister was shot in Handlova, about 150 kilometres from the country’s capital, and was taken to hospital.

The television station TA3 reported that a suspect had been arrested at the scene.

The attack took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the 59-year-old prime minister was due to attend a government meeting. Police have cordoned off the area.

German chancellor Olaf Scholz also condemned the attack, saying he was “deeply shocked by the cowardly attack”.

“Violence has no place in European politics in this day and age. My thoughts are with Robert Fico, his family and the Slovak people,” he added on the social media network X.
