"It was with indignation that I learned of the assassination attempt on Robert Fico, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic. Nothing can justify this heinous crime," Putin wrote in a telegram to the President of Slovakia, released by the Kremlin
Putin called Fico "a courageous and determined man," saying that these "qualities will help" the Slovak leader overcome "this difficult situation."
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is "between life and death," according to the government in Bratislava, after he was shot and wounded earlier today, according to his official Facebook page, which said the next hours "will be decisive."
Slovak television TA3 reported that the 59-year-old Slovak leader was shot four times in the stomach outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova, about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital.
Police have cordoned off the scene and a suspect has been detained.
The Slovak leader was airlifted by helicopter to Banska Bystrica, 29 kilometers away.
