The Houston Zoo is expecting a big moment later this year with the birth of a baby elephant in late 2024.

The parents-to-be are 33-year-old Asian elephant Shanti and her longtime mate, 58-year-old Thailand, the local newspaper Chron reported.

Shanti has been pregnant for some time now — elephants have a 22-month gestation period — but the countdown is on for the little one's arrival, whose sex will remain a surprise to everyone, as ultrasounds can't determine it.

After giving birth, Shanti and her newborn will spend several days bonding and undergoing postnatal exams. After that, the calf will be formally introduced to the rest of the zoo's elephant herd.

This will be Shanti's seventh calf born at the Houston Zoo, joining her other children, including Nelson and Joy, according to the outlet.

"Shanti is an experienced mom who is very attentive and protective of her calves," the zoo said in a statement.
