"I am alarmed by the news of the attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico," Biden said in an official statement from the White House, adding that he and his wife, Jill, are "praying for the Prime Minister's speedy recovery." "We stand with his family and the people of Slovakia. We condemn this horrific act of violence," the U.S. leader added, noting that the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava "is in close contact with the government and stands ready to assist." British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also commented on the attack on Fico. "We are shocked by this terrible news. We stand with Prime Minister Fico and his family," the Brit posted in a brief message on social media network X. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is "between life and death," according to the government in Bratislava, after he was the target of a shooting attack earlier today, according to his official Facebook page, indicating that the next few hours "will be decisive." Slovak television TA3 reported that the 59-year-old Slovak leader was hit in the stomach by four shots fired outside the House of Culture in the city of Handlova, located about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital. Police cordoned off the scene and the suspect was arrested. The Slovak leader was airlifted to Banska Bystrica, 29 kilometers away.
