The song 'Europapa' by singer Joost Klein, who was expelled from the 68th Eurovision Song Contest hours before the grand final, was heard in the bells of churches in several cities in the Netherlands on Tuesday.

According to the local press, the initiative came from radio station 3FM, as a way to support the 26-year-old artist, who was disqualified, according to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), "following threatening behaviour towards a female member of the production team".

However, the Dutch broadcaster Avrotros assured that he made "a threatening movement" towards the camera, but "did not touch the woman".

The station also indicated that it "consulted extensively" with the EBU and "proposed several solutions", but the decision to disqualify the artist was made anyway.

Radio station 3FM said that 'Europapa' was heard in the churches of the cities of Nijkerk, Weesp, Groningen, Oldenzaal, Venlo, Leiden, Bussum, Elburg, Hasselt, Hattem, Eindhoven, Gorinchem, Vlissingen, Meppel, Andel and Doetinchem.

You can see small excerpts of the initiative in the videos below and, in the gallery above, 'Europapa' being played in the Church of Saint Catherine, in Eindhoven.

Joost Klein represented the Netherlands with 'Europapa', a song that is an ode to Europe and a world without borders, as well as a tribute to the parents who died when the singer was a teenager.

According to data revealed on Saturday morning, 'Europapa' reached second place in the second semi-final of the event, which took place on Thursday, behind only Israel.

The 68th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest was held in Malmö, Sweden, between 7 and 11 May and, despite criticism due to Israel's participation, Switzerland, the most neutral country in the world, ended up winning with Nemo and 'The Code'.
