An antique copper weathervane that was stolen from a Vermont train station in the northeastern United States 40 years ago has been recovered and returned to the state this past week.
“We are very pleased to see this valuable historic artifact and beautiful piece of art returned to its home here in Vermont,” said Judith Ehrlich, historic preservation officer for the Vermont Agency of Transportation, which made the announcement in a statement cited by the Associated Press (AP). The weathervane, which dates to 1910 — and depicts a steam locomotive and coal car — was made by the W.A. Snow Iron Works Inc. The historic artifact had been atop the White River Junction station in Hartford before it was stolen on Nov. 3, 1983, according to the agency. Now, nearly four decades later, it was consigned to the New York auction house Sotheby’s. The organization Art Loss Register, which has a database of lost, stolen and looted art, antiques and collectibles, confirmed that the piece was indeed the stolen weathervane. The auction house subsequently withdrew it from sale and shipped it to Vermont. The weathervane’s placement “so that it can once again be enjoyed” is currently being determined, Ehrlich added.
