The image depicts a caricature-like version of Australia's richest person, who is worth an estimated $15.3 billion, and is part of Namatjira's first major survey exhibition, which won the Archibald Prize – one of Australia's most prestigious art awards. However, the portrait was not to Rinehart's taste, The Guardian reports.
The National Gallery of Australia has declined to remove the artwork, saying in a statement to the British publication that it welcomes public conversation about its collection and exhibitions.
"Since the National Gallery acquired Jackson Pollock’s Blue Poles in 1973, there has been robust public debate about the artistic merit of works in the national collection and/or on display at the gallery. We present artworks to the Australian public to inspire people to explore, experience and learn about art," it said in a statement.

The portrait hangs alongside images of Queen Elizabeth II and footballer Adam Goodes and is set to remain on display until July 21. Before going on show in Canberra, it was exhibited at the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide from October 2023 to January 2024.
