French Autarch who had 70 kg of cannabis at home released after a month

Jamilah Habseoui, the mayor of Avallon in eastern France, has been released under judicial supervision more than a month after French authorities found 70 kilograms of cannabis at her home.
The release "was carried out after a favorable opinion from the public prosecutor," Hugues de Phily, the public prosecutor of Auxerre, told the Agence-France Presse (AFP) news agency, without providing further details.
The politician was arrested on April 7 after authorities seized 70 kilograms of cannabis and 983 grams of other drugs. She was charged with drug trafficking and placed in pre-trial detention after appearing before an investigating judge.
In addition to the drugs, police found 7,143 euros in cash and two gold bars.
The public prosecutor also identified "two brothers of Jamilah Habsaoui", both with criminal records for drug trafficking, as people "capable of carrying out the regular purchase and resale of narcotics at their sister's home".
The mayor and five other people, including the two brothers, were arrested as part of Operation Clean Space XXL, which began in October 2023.
Last week, in a statement sent to the French press by her lawyers, Habsaoui "reaffirmed [her] innocence". "I have confidence in the justice system, to which I guarantee my full cooperation so that the truth may come to light," she said.
Habsaoui, 46, was elected mayor of Avallon in 2021 as a candidate for the French Socialist Party, and is also a regional deputy on the Yonne Regional Council. She stepped down from her political posts after her arrest.
