"I am deeply shocked by the attack on Prime Minister Fico of the Slovak Republic. I pray for his speedy recovery. We unequivocally condemn this attack on democracy and express our strong solidarity with the Slovak government and its people," Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on social networking service X (formerly Twitter).

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, in turn, said that "violent acts cannot be forgiven," expressing solidarity and hope for a speedy recovery.

Fico was attacked on Wednesday, after a Council of Ministers meeting in the city of Handlova, as he was greeting dozens of residents at the door of the House of Culture, where the government meeting was held.

At that moment, a 71-year-old man fired "four or five shots at Fico," wrote the news agency Efe.

The attacker, arrested after the shooting, has a gun license and shouted before the attack on Fico: "Robo (Robert), come closer," added Efe.

One of the bullets hit the politician in the stomach, although some witnesses said the leader was hit in the sternum.

For now, it is known that Fico is in the hospital and that the operation was successful, so his life is not in danger.

Japan also went through a similar situation in July 2022, when the former prime minister of the Asian country, Shinzo Abe, was assassinated in broad daylight while giving a speech in the street.

Months later, in April 2023, Fumio Kishida also suffered an attack, when a 24-year-old man threw an improvised bomb, which did not injure the prime minister or others present.
