"Tonight, the doctors managed to stabilize the patient's condition. Unfortunately, the condition remains very serious, because the injuries are complicated," said Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Robert Kalinak.

A hospital official also said today that Robert Fico is stable, but in serious condition.

"Doctors continue to treat Robert Fico in an attempt to improve his condition," Robert Kalinak told reporters at the hospital in Banska Bystrica.

Roberto Fico, 59, was shot in the stomach several times outside the House of Culture in the city of Handlova, located about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital.

The police isolated the scene and the suspect was arrested.

The perpetrator of the shooting against Fico is a 71-year-old man from the city of Levice, in the southeast of the country, who was arrested by the police at the scene of the attack, according to the Slovak media.

The suspect was identified by the Slovak media as a local writer.
