The migrants sent a distress signal to the Italian search and rescue center, which in turn informed the authorities in Athens, since the boat was in waters under Greek jurisdiction, about 43 kilometers south of Crete.

Four private vessels, a coast guard boat and a helicopter are taking part in the search operations, which are being hampered by adverse weather conditions with strong winds.

The rescued, who told the authorities that there were a total of 45 people on board the boat, are in good health and will be transferred to the city of Chania for identification and registration.

The origin of the migrants and where the boat departed from is still unknown.

On Wednesday, the Coast Guard located 36 migrants on the small island of Elafonisi, adjacent to Crete, who managed to reach a beach on the island in a small boat.
