Five Israeli soldiers killed by 'friendly fire' in Gaza
At least five Israeli soldiers were killed in a "friendly fire" incident in the northern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, when troops in a tank mistakenly identified them as Palestinian militants, Israeli authorities confirmed on Thursday.

Jerusalem, May 16, 2024 (Lusa) - At least five Israeli soldiers were killed by “friendly fire” in an incident that occurred in the northern Gaza Strip on Wednesday, when troops in a tank mistook them for Palestinian militants, Israeli authorities confirmed today.
An Israeli military spokesman told the EFE news agency that there was a “crossfire from a tank against the 202nd battalion that resulted in the death of five soldiers and other wounded troops”.
The Israeli army today updated its list of soldiers killed in Gaza and added the names of five people, all aged between 20 and 22.
The Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel, citing a preliminary investigation by the Israeli military, said the soldiers were killed after an Israeli tank operating in the area of the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip fired two shells at a building.
In addition, seven other soldiers, all members of the 202nd battalion of the paratrooper brigade, were wounded.
On Wednesday, Hamas’s armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, said in a statement that at least 12 Israeli soldiers had been killed in a friendly fire incident in the Jabalia area.
The Israeli army has not yet officially clarified the details of the incident.
Since the beginning of the war in the Gaza Strip, 278 Israeli soldiers have died, according to the country’s armed forces. In addition, a contractor working for the Israeli Ministry of Defense died on Wednesday after being injured during an operation in Rafah three days ago.
Most of the Israeli casualties in recent days have occurred in the north of the enclave, where the army has resumed operations on the assumption that the Islamist group Hamas is regrouping in that area.
