The new outbreak of violence between the pro-Iranian group and the Israeli army comes after the killing on Tuesday night of a local Hezbollah commander in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah fighters "fired more than 60 Katyusha rockets" at several Israeli military positions in the Israeli-occupied and annexed Golan Heights, Hezbollah said in a statement.

It said the attack was "a response to the Israeli enemy's strikes last night in the Bekaa region".

Five Israeli strikes hit the Baalbek region, a Hezbollah stronghold in eastern Lebanon near the Syrian border, the Lebanese news agency ANI reported, saying there was one wounded and "several material damages".

According to a source close to Hezbollah, one of the strikes hit "a military camp" of the group, which has a large number of bases in the region.

An Israeli army spokesman "confirmed that an airstrike was carried out deep inside Lebanon" against a target linked to a Hezbollah project to manufacture "precision-guided missiles".

The strikes came after Hezbollah said late Wednesday it had targeted a military base near Tiberias in northern Israel, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the Lebanese border.

Since the start of a war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas on July 8, Hezbollah has fired at positions in northern Israel in support of the Palestinian Islamist movement.

But the Lebanese group's strikes have generally been limited to positions near the border, while Israel has increasingly retaliated deep inside Lebanese territory and targeted Hezbollah officials.

The Israeli army said it had "eliminated" a local Hezbollah commander, Hussein Makki, in an air strike late Tuesday in the southern Lebanese coastal city of Tyre, a death confirmed by Hezbollah.

Israel's war against Hamas, now in its seventh month, has killed at least 413 people on the Lebanese side, mostly Hezbollah fighters but also nearly 80 civilians, according to a count by the French news agency AFP.

On the Israeli side, at least 14 soldiers and 10 civilians have been killed in the fighting, which has displaced tens of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border.
