PSD MEPs want to help Gaza university students to study in the EU

Two PSD MEPs proposed to the European Commission the creation of a platform to support the transfer of Palestinian university students to the EU, following the example of the one launched for Syrians by former President Jorge Sampaio in 2013.

According to a statement released today, MEPs Ricardo Morgado and Lídia Pereira presented the project called 'Gaza Higher Education Platform for Students (GHEPS)' to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, an initiative that aims to provide access opportunities to higher education in the European Union (EU) to young Palestinians affected by the conflict in the region.

Considering that higher education can be a lever to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, the MEPs propose offering scholarships to cover tuition fees, housing and daily expenses.

The selection will be made based on academic merit and the successful candidates will be placed in higher education institutions in EU Member States, in courses similar to those they were attending and with recognition of the academic path already completed.

This proposal is based on similar successful initiatives, such as the former Global Platform for Syrian Students, launched by former President Jorge Sampaio in 2013, which was later extended to students from other regions where there are conflicts, and is now called the Global Platform for Higher Education in Emergency Situations.

Since its creation - and including partners such as the Council of Europe, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the International Organization for Migration, among many others - the platform has already awarded more than 750 scholarships and supported around 300 students from various levels of university higher education.
